The most frustrating part about studying for your exams is this : you open your notes and textbooks, and you realised you do not have any memory about the topic at hand. Because when this happens, it also means you need to read through everything from scratch, try to understand it, and then only actually get down to study and remember it. This takes up a lot of time and effort, and let's face it, we do not have time for that when we are trying to cram for our exams.

In order to avoid this from happening, there is only one simple thing you need to do.  That is, to focus and pay attention in class when the teacher is teaching. This can include lessons in schools or even tuition classes. Whatever it is, if you can focus during the lesson, your work is half done. All you have to do during exams is to review what you learned, and study to understand and remember it better.

But then again, this is much easier said than done. Many of us find it very difficult to pay attention in class. Be it because the subject is boring to you, the teacher speaks in a monotonous voice, or you are easily distracted by any other things other than the actual lesson itself. Sometimes you go through a whole day of classes, and when you get home, you realised you do not recall anything because you were not able to focus at all.

Today we are going to share with you some secrets to be able to focus in class, and at the same time, help you save time on preparing for your exams.

1. Get enough rest beforehand.

I know this is pretty much common sense, but many students forego sleep in order to gain more time to get other things done. However, this is going to bring more harm in the long run. Students are recommended to get about 7-8 hours of sleep each night in order to be well-rested. With enough rest, you will be feeling much more energised and will be able to focus better in class instead of nodding off when the lesson is going on. Not only that, when you have enough sleep, your mind will be in a more alert state, and that can help you absorb the information of the lesson better.

2. Prepare for the class beforehand.

Sometimes all it takes for us to focus better is to be mentally prepared for it. Before attending a lesson, tell yourself that you are going to pay attention to the class fully. This can put you in the right mood and attitude to focus better throughout the lesson. You should also prepare your related study materials before attending the class. For example, you can skim through your textbook or notes of the specific lesson so you can have a better idea of the topic that will be discussed in the lesson. Bring along all the notes and books that are needed so you will not feel lost when the teacher is going through them. With these preparations, you will be able to focus on the class instead of being easily distracted or demotivated.

3. Fully participate in the lesson.

Another good way to pay attention in class is to participate in the lesson completely. This means to keep up with what the teacher is teaching, ask questions when you are lost or do not understand what the teacher is explaining, and also answering questions. Remember that the learning process is a two-way communication. So do not feel shy to ask questions or answer them. When you do so, you will find the lesson to be much engaging and enjoyable and will definitely gain more during the lesson.

4. Take notes throughout the lesson.

If you attend a class, just sitting there listening to the teacher, you will naturally feel bored or distracted after a short period of time. Your attention span will not last throughout the lesson and your mind will be drifting to other things. Hence, it can be helpful if you jot down some notes during the lesson. Write down the important points that the teacher goes through. Highlight the parts the teacher is emphasising. You may also get a better idea of what the whole topic is discussing and even gain insights on what will be tested during your exams.

However, it is also important to learn how to balance between paying attention to what the teacher is teaching and writing down notes. You do not want to feel lost because you were too busy writing down notes. A helpful way to juggle is to write notes in point form and use abbreviations. As long as you are able to understand what you are writing, it will be sufficient for you when you prepare for your exams.

5. Sit in front of the classroom.

Most schools have designated seats for students throughout the year. However, it is much conducive to pay attention when you are sitting close to the front of the classroom. This way, you will be able to see the board clearly and hear the teacher better. You are also less likely to fall asleep or chat with your classmates.

If you are already assigned to a seat at the back of the class, you can try asking your teacher's permission to bring your chair to the front during the lesson. As long as you are committed to the lesson, I am sure the teacher will be happy to let you come forward.

It is very important to pay attention in class as it can help you understand the topics better. When you have a better understanding of the lessons, you save a lot of time on figuring out the concepts when you need to prepare for your exams.

Try following these tips so you can focus on all your lessons and be on your way to study better for your upcoming exams. Good luck.
