1. Hi, Daniel. Can you please tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do?

I'm the bestselling author of The Happy Student: 5 Steps to Academic Fulfillment and Success. I empower students to become both successful and happy.

2. We know that you were very outstanding while you were in school, both academically and in  cocurricular activities too. What was your key to juggling so many things at once?

It took me years to develop the mindset and skills to be able to do those things. But I now realise that the point of education and life isn't to keep striving for more and more achievements or awards. It's much more important to have a strong sense of purpose and to focus on contribution rather than achievement. That's the kind of approach I encourage students to take.

3. What were the biggest struggles you faced when you were in school?

For several years, I was also the victim of bullying, which affected me both emotionally and mentally. This made it hard for me to concentrate on the things that were important.

4. How did you overcome those problems?

I learned to forgive the bullies and to take full responsibility for my responses to the situations I was in. This helped me to see that we always have a choice, no matter what we're going through.

5. What is the best advice you can give a student who is feeling stressed out with the overwhelming responsibilities from school?

My advice would be to identify what really matters to you personally and to say no to everything else. I would advise students to take some time to think about what success means to them personally. This way, they'll make choices more intentionally, rather than just doing what others are doing.

6. In your opinion, what is the best way for parents to motivate their children in their studies?

Parents must lead by example. I've observed that parents who are always excited about learning new things, taking courses, attending seminars, etc. and who share this love of learning with their children are able to pass on this passion. In the long run, their children will learn to love learning, and won't be overly focused on grades.

7. What advice can you give working parents who need to juggle their career and family responsibilities?

Parents must be clear about what values and principles they want to live by, and what kind of family life they want as well. When they do this, they'll be able to make difficult decisions that will get them closer to their long-term goals. If you don't identify what values and principles you want to live by, you'll most likely end up obsessing over material possessions, at the expense of other things in life.

8. As a coach to students yourself, what is your advice to aspiring tutors to become a good mentor for their students?

Listen to them, ask for their opinions, be patient, and show them basic respect. This is the foundation of a strong mentoring relationship.

9. One final question. Out of so many study tips, in your opinion, what is the most important tip for students to prepare for their exams?

Don't wait until the last minute to prepare for exams. Review the new information you learn periodically. If you do this, the information will mostly be stored in your long-term memory by the time it comes to the exams.

Of course, this is easier said than done, but that's why it's so important to develop healthy habits on a daily basis.
